5 SEO Basics Every UK Small Business Should Get Right in 2026
You don't need to hire an SEO agency. Get these five basics right and you'll out-rank most of your local competition.
SEO has a reputation for being complicated and expensive. For a UK small business, it really doesn't need to be. Get these five things right and you'll be ahead of most of your local competition, without paying anyone £500 a month.
1. Claim and finish your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-impact thing you can do. Real opening hours, phone number, photos of your premises, list of services, recent reviews. Google rewards profiles that get updated — post something at least once a fortnight, even if it's just a photo.
2. Use local keywords in your page titles
If you're a hairdresser in Sheffield, your homepage title should say so. "Sheffield Hair Salon | Cuts & Colour | Bennett Studio" beats "Welcome to Our Salon" every time.
3. Make sure your website is fast and mobile-friendly
Google literally measures how long your pages take to load and downgrades slow sites. Run yours through PageSpeed Insights. If it scores under 70 on mobile, fix that before anything else.
4. Get listed on UK directories
Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp UK, Tripadvisor (if relevant), and a couple of local chamber-of-commerce directories. These citations help Google trust that your business is real and in the place you say.
5. Publish one useful article a month
Not fifty — one. Pick a real question your customers ask ("How long does a balayage take?", "Do you do same-day boiler repairs?") and answer it properly on your blog. Over a year that's twelve pieces of content Google can rank you for.
Don't pay for advanced SEO until you've done these
Plenty of agencies will charge you £500 a month for advanced SEO when you haven't even claimed your Google Business Profile. Get the basics right first.
